Trends in the Pet Industry

Once, people bought their pets the simple necessities only. These days, new trends focus on improving our pet’s lifestyle as well as ours.

One popular trend is earth-friendly products. These include natural litters, toys, accessories and organic food options. Another interesting trend is that brand name companies like Paul Mitchell, Omaha Steaks, Origins, Harley Davidson and Old Navy have started marketing products for pets. Also, if you shop at home and garden centers, you will find many pet products for sale.

Pet-friendly hotels have become more popular than ever. The hotels aren’t just allowing pets to visit anymore. Now they offer special accommodations and treats for the animals. Pet foods have become increasingly sophisticated and can be tailored to the pet’s age and health. Special car seats for transporting pets have joined the list of pet products.

Grooming is no longer just about brushing your animal’s fur. Many different products for cleaning your pet are now on the market. In addition, beauty products and spa treatments have become popular. Massages, yoga and gyms are offered too.

Technology is playing a part in the pet industry as well. Computerized identification tags, digital aquarium kits, automatic doors and feeders, enhanced reptile terrarium lighting systems and touch-activated toys are all available. Programmable feeding and drinking systems, automatic and battery-operated toys, self-cleaning litter boxes and self-warming pet mats are part of this trend too.

Fashion is serving pets and pet owners alike. Costumes and outfits for pets, monogrammed sweaters for animals and fashionable pet carriers for the owners are all popular.

The pet industry has grown tremendously over the last couple of years, with $45.5 billion spent on pets in 2009 in the United States. It is estimated that $58 billion will be spent in 2014.
