Don't Build Your Future on For-Profit College Degrees
A new report shows there is little, if any, added value to obtain a for-profit college degree. Workers looking to advance their careers through education might be better off sticking to non-profit public higher education outlets. That's the finding of a working paper from the National Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research. (Fortunately it's blessed with the acronym

What New Hires Need from Your Onboarding
My aunt has been working in the social services field for many, many years now. She recently moved to a new state and landed a new job. Although it's in the same field (social work) it requires many different responsibilities. I was interested when she began telling me about the weeklong intensive training she and other new hires were currently undergoing. They were being trained for 8 hours a day for the roles—and that came with ...

3 Questions Leaders Should ask About Their Employees
It used to be that employees showed up to work and quietly punched out a full day without making much noise. Of course, workplace dynamics were much simpler then. Today's working professionals know there is a constant demand for them to perform at a high level, to innovate, and to be all they can be. Interestingly enough, this pressure is being thrown right back at leadership. And why is this? Because people have ...

All Demand, No Supply: the Vanishing Human Providers
Imagine a world in which worker demand for jobs increasingly and vastly exceeds employer supply, as robots get the jobs, or one in which the human demand for communication and information dwarfs face-to-face, unmediated, direct human supply of it.

Unemployment Benefits Claims Reach Eight-year Low
Fewer Americans filed applications for unemployment insurance benefits over the past month than at any time in more than eight years, signaling employers are hanging on to workers as demand improves. The four-week average of jobless claims, considered a less volatile measure than the weekly figure, dropped to 297,250, the lowest since April 2006, from 300,750 the prior week. Claims in the period ended July 26 climbed to 302,000, in line with the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg, from a revised 279,000 the prior ...
